It's hard to believe they haven't been around forever but, believe it or not, the tagging system has only been grouping our social media activities for 10 years!
It all started back in August '07 with a single Tweet, when Google product designer Chris Messina first suggested the idea of using the humble # pound symbol (as it was then known) in front of a word as a way to group concepts.
Since then the hashtag has exploded across social media and pop culture, with Twitter users generating some 125 million hashtags each and every day - and that's not including comparable numbers over on Instagram, Facebook, Tumblr and the like.
We've seen some truly life-changing outcomes as a result of viral hashtags and their associated campaigns.
And for those of us who couldn't be there in person for once-in-a-lifetime events (like us on the weekend, desperately wishing Australia had been in the path of the total solar eclipse!), hashtags have brought us closer to the action with the ability to follow along in real-time.
